Philosophy
In North Smithfield, we believe the Social Studies Program will:
- Establish clear and high expectations aligned to the Rhode Island Grade Span Expectations for Social Studies and the Common Core State Standards for Literacy in Social Studies.
- Provide high quality standards-based instruction for students, using best practices, analysis of available data and a variety of assessment strategies.
- Encourage students to become historically literate and responsible citizens.
- Provide opportunities to develop multiple strategies for critical thinking, researching, and examining multiple perspectives.
- Encourage students to become confident and effective communicators and proficient readers and writers in the content area.
- Provide students with opportunities and resources to develop Social Studies skills they need to pursue college and career goals and to participate fully as informed, productive members of society.
